Today, we closed Opera Link and its public API.
It's the end of an era for our older products. We introduced Opera Link in 2008. At the time, it was a natural extension of our Presto-based browsers, syncing things like notes and the personal bar.
We've changed our focus a little in the past few years. We're hoping to develop solid features for a wider audience. So when we shifted from Presto to Chromium, we started developing new ways of syncing data with fewer steps, hoping to create a seamless syncing experience right in the guts and chrome of the browser. In this spirit, we've focused our resources on the new generation of Opera and Opera Mini browsers - for computers, Android and iOS. Syncing data is still a big part of our vision when we build these apps; it is firmly on our list of priorities. We're just cleaning up and letting our older technology retire.
If you've held on to your old Opera or Opera Mini browsers, your browsing data will still live in your app and the app itself should still work without any problems. But, you will no longer be able to sync your data between devices using the Opera Link service. Additionally, you will no longer be able to access your data through Opera Link's web interface. There's a new service ready and waiting for you to try in the latest Opera and Opera Mini browsers. You can use your old Opera Link username and password and start syncing right now. Plus, you'll get all the latest features and security that comes with these upgrades. Check them out.
We fully expect some bad feedback on this decision. One of our fans recently sent a lovely note that hoped to put "a curse on you, traitors." We're just as sentimental as any of you may be and understand your reservations. But, we're also optimistic that we can make something even better in the future.
Try out the new sync and let us know what you think.P.S. If you developed apps or services using our OAuth API, they probably won't work very well with the Opera Link service shutdown. We're super pleased that you took the time to create these uniquely-Opera experiences and we're looking forward to seeing what we can offer you in the new Chromium environment. Thanks for taking some time to add to the Opera family.
