Opening a link in a background tab with middle-click

Just noticed that some links are not opened in new (background) tab when middle-clicked, but are ajax-loaded instead, as if they were clicked with primary mouse button. Did I miss something - is this a feature? Or a bug?
For example, any page with an article (paper) details on wiley.com contains links in "ARTICLE TOOLS" block, which are ajax-loaded in the current tab being middle-clicked, while links from the breadcrumbs or the page footer are opened as expected - in a new background tab.
