H.264 support for Opera and openSUSE

I am using openSUSE Leap 42.2 and Opera 46.0.2597.57.

Some videos on the internet (maybe the half on YouTube) do not work on Opera. YouTube tells me that I cannot watch the video and suggests me visiting https://www.youtube.com/html5. H.264 and MSE & H.264 are not supported by my browser as the page mentions, although Opera is listed as suported.

I did some research and installed the following packages (which were not the sollution):

chromium-ffmpeg-extra
chromium-ffmpeg-extra-debuginfo
chromium-ffmpegsumo
Maybe I need to mention that Firefox works pretty fine with YouTube and other videos that do not work on Opera.

Thanks a lot for your help.

PS: If this issue is fixed with openSUSE Leap 42.3 this would be an option for me, but I still hadn't enough time for an update.

Since opensuse's search page here is not that helpful, because it gives me no way to search for packages on opensuse leap 42.x, please read first the thread on my signature.
I would give a better answer if I knew that opensuse does package chromium ffmpeg codecs, sorry.

If it does package them, what version are they on?

Hi @eagerhalfling, have you already tried to add the below repo?
zypper addrepo -f http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_Leap_42.3/ packman
If not, then add it, update the "chromium-ffmpeg-extra" package (others are not needed for Opera), and see if that helps in your case.

@eagerhalfling Clearly we are back to the bad old days where none of the basics work and you have to find out yourself.

You have made the right start by asking questions . I found no youtube videos or facebook videos played properly and even vids on mail.com would not even play. Silly infighting really ,people hell bent on making dollars out of you so you have to outsmart them.

Here is what I got that fixed my problems.

Note the "chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_67.0.3396.99".
Looks like this is one of the workarounds for proprietary shit that you need to find a version for your operating system and install it.

Here is what is said about it on the download site

This package contains the multi-threaded ffmpeg codecs needed for the HTML5
 <audio> and <video> tags. In addition to the patent-free ogg, vorbis and
 theora codecs, aac/ac3/mpeg4audio/h264/mov/mp3 are also included. See
 chromium-codecs-ffmpeg if you prefer only the patent-free codecs

Hi @bobsteel, I would rather not use as such old version of the lib - the same goes for running any web browser as root (as you mentioned it in the other topic).
Maybe you can try to use one of the pkgs for Xenial instead. Alternatively you can check one of the pkgs for 16.04.1 from here, for example "chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_84.0.4147.56-0ubuntu1_ppa1_16.04.1_amd64.deb".
