Error message and restart when contacting running opera

I have opera running and give on the command line: opera file-name
Usually the file will be displayed in a new tab.
However, quite often opera terminates and is restarted again.
The terminating instance displays:
Request for unknown Channel-associated interface: ui::mojom::GpuMain

The opera version:
44.0.2510.1449 - Opera is up to date
Update stream: Stable
System: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (x86; MATE)

Any ideas?
