Sidebar messaging apps slow and unresponsive

At some point between updates the sidebar messaging apps became slow and unresponsive (WhatsApp and Telegram) and when I scroll, one of the CPU threads jumps to 100% usage.

I'm using Opera 67.0.3575.53 on Ubuntu 18.04 and I have an i7-4790 with 16GB of RAM.

Please help!
