Hello, Opera team! I get CPU temperature spikes of up to 84°C when using Opera, doing ordinary stuff like building a website in WordPress or browsing.

This happens with hardware acceleration enabled or disabled.

Is there a log I could submit for you guys to look into, or do you have any suggestions at all about how to handle this? They would be greatly appreciated.

Although I have no solution to your issue for the time being, I have to ask.
Since your laptop uses optimus (= an intel gpu for the easy stuff and an nvidia for the hard work), how does it behave under regular usage or in other apps? Optimus support for linux is simply horrible.

If there is a way to disable one of the two through bios, please give it a try. Thankfully, you are using the nvidia driver for the nvidia card, which is a lot better than nouveau (= the opensource driver for the nvidias).

It's actually fairly decent. The two apps that I use that take a toll on the GPU would be Darktable and Gimp, both with OpenCL support enabled. Neither cause any serious temp or load increases.

I did have loud fan noise and very high CPU temps at first (this is a new laptop, only 2 weeks old) with RetroArch and VirtualBox (with a Windows 10 VM), but for both, I was able to find settings that I disabled to completely eliminate the problems.

In RetroArch, it was the "Hard GPU sync" setting, which synchronizes the CPU and GPU. In VirtualBox, it was "Enable PAE/NX".

I will see if I can disable the Intel graphics chip in BIOS.

Hi jimunderscorep, unfortunately, my BIOS does not give me that option. I noticed that the temperature goes up when I open Beaver Builder, a website builder running on WordPress, on the front page of www.sachverstaendigenforumglas.de.

If there's a log file that Opera writes that might help you, do let me know.

Try prime or bumblebee so as to be able to select which card will be used when you launnch a specific app. Then make opera use the nvidia one and check the temperatures again.

It has been 4+ years since I last tried to make an optimus laptop work, so I do not remember anything I did back then. In the end, I gave up and I installed windows on it.

I think I've found a solution. I had to enable the CPU's "power boost" feature using TLP!
