All videos stutter

Hi all
I'm running Opera 53.0.2907.68 stable on a Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (x86_64; GNOME) machine.
My problem is...
Every time a watch a video (youtube, facebook, other websites) it plays mostly OK, but at times the image (not the audio) freezes for about 1 second.
This happens many times during the same video.
Not enough to make it unwatchable, but it's definitely annoying. What can I do to fix this?
Thanks for the help.

What gpu (and driver) are you on?
2 things you should take into consideration regardless
a) Gnome is a resource hog, so it does not leave enough cpu/mem for the browser to run properly. Blame gnome for that, there is not much you can do,
b) Due to the lack of proper html5 support, opera plays most videos as webm (e.g on youtube), which lacks hardware acceleration during playback. To overcome that, install chromium ffmpeg extras for your distro. This will make videos play as h264, which can be hardware accelerated. As for the why, please read the thread on my signature. -

Hi
I already had the latest ffmpeg extras, that's why videos work flawlessly both in Chrome and Firefox.
My machine runs an Intel HD Graphics 620 (Kaby Lake GT2) paired with a Nvidia GeForce 940mx (NV118).
The drivers I am using are the Nouveau ones. -

I experience the same problem. I have ffmpeg extras and videos in chrome and firefox work as they should.

A behaviour I have noticed... whenever the stutter happens, the video (not the audio) is frozen for about 3 seconds, consistently.
But if I move the mouse, the frozen image instantly resumes motion. What could this possibly mean?
