Opera freezing and running painfully slow after installing version 58

Whenever I open Opera, my antivirus (Trend Micro) uses up to 70% CPU and Opera goes from a complete whitescreen to slowly loading pages. Trying to load unpacked extensions results in an immediate freeze with the small pop-up explorer showing no folders. After crashing or closing it, the task takes a minute to disappear and for my antivirus to calm down.
Same story on my laptop: everything worked fine until I updated to version 58.
I thought downgrading to version 55 would help but it did not.I contacted Trend Micro's customer support but they were not able to help me
Other browsers such as Firefox work flawlessly
I tried:
reinstalling Opera (versions 58 and 55)
disabling various extensions
disabling my antivirus (which resolves the issue temporarily) (!)OS:
Windows 8.1 (latest updates installed) and Windows 10 on my laptop
Trend Micro 'Maximum Security' Version 15.0.1212
