Opera now showing boxes instead of text or symbols

for some reason opera specifically stopped showing unicode or certain font symbols that previously were visible on the browser. and it's specifically opera, because if i copy-paste it elsewhere on my laptop then the text shows up just fine.
i don't know why it started and i don't remember what time, maybe a month or two ago. i barely do much on the browser so it's not like i'd have done anything to accidentally cause it, i think it started after some update.
