Opera Max not working

On a Samsung Galaxy S4 (lollipop) I have Opera Max installed and set up in VIP mode. It was working fine until I converted to VIP mode, but twice now I've had a problem where emails and web pages are not loading correctly and an app to get my three mobile balance failing to login with the Opera Max VPN active. I also then find that google searches fail. As soon as I switch off the VPN everything works correctly (makes no difference if this is using wi-fi or mobile data).
Has anyone else observed problems with the VPN for opera max not serving web pages and e-mails correctly and failing on google searches? Any advice how to resolve this?
I sent a fault report to Opera via the app, but have had no reply at all.

It's VIP mode that I'm referring to and the fact the VPN doesn't seem to be working correctly - though privacy mode is on too. I'll try turning privacy mode off and update.

I'm not on the VIP age so you may try Samsung version or any version with WiFi filter.

from my experience opera max works fine and autostarts on a plain vanilla android 'aosp'.
samsung has modified this on their devices, so that a vpn tunnel to a web proxy cannot be established independently without samsung controlling it.
official narrative is 'user protection against misbehaving or malicious apps', it also maintains samsung's authority on the use of the device.- write a bug report to opera: 'report a problem'
- root that bugger
- avoid samsung in the future

Thanks, so are you saying Samsung have made it so that Opera Max can't successfully autostart?
My phone is rooted - so what do you suggest?
I sent a bug report to opera via the option in the app - but have had no response - is there any other way?
I'm using Samsung S4 because it does everything I want it to (unlike iphone and I seriously comopared / considered that option) and it didn't cost too much to buy (about £100 with guarantee). The main reason however, is because I can easily and cheaply replace the battery, which is essential for me since I expect to keep it for 5 years - I don't believe in the consumer throw-away society. I also can't afford, and have no desire to replace technology every year or two especially given the impact of that on the environment. If I had money to spare I'd rather give it away to charities or others is need. I'm aware of no other phone that offers this mix - low price (for an older model), good hardware, replaceable battery, reasonable battery life and longevity. It's just a pity that Samsung lock so much down stopping some useful Android functionality from working correctly - so this is certainly not about brand loyalty - Samsung don't deserve that.

Please note, when internet access and emails fail with Opera Max, the VPN is still running, and restarting it doesn't fix the problem.

nothing wrong with samsung's hardware, but they are following apple's lead by locking in their customers into a golden cage for some extra profit and control.
have you considered a custom rom?

afaik opera max acts as a web proxy via an android vpn tunnel, so no real vpn functionality and no guaranteed privacy either.
my setup is afwall+ and adaway to control data traffic, network log and autostart (all apps from fdroid), plus xprivacy from xposed framework for permissions under degoogled standard android 4.4.2, no custom rom.
opera mini as standard, opera max only occasionally, huge downloads via uc mini, vids per tubemate/vlc.
works for me, ymmv.
