Well, apparently, despite every other browser supporting Netflix, did Opera seriously just shrug their shoulders on it and say, "oh well?" Can't support the Silverlight plugin and there's no other option for playback, so you're just going to not bother to fix the issue of not being able to play video on, arguably, the most readily used video streaming service out there? Does anyone know a workaround, or should I just ditch Opera?

Netflix uses the Silverlight plug-in to playback videos. The plug-in has been discontinued by Microsoft and is no longer receiving updates. More critically, it is not available to 64-bit browsers. So right now, you cannot use Netflix with Opera.

A plug-in free alternative is being worked out and we hope to be ready with it very soon. Sorry for the intermediate period where things doesn’t “just work” for you.

Hello, I just "switched" to Opera based on my Safari constantly crashing since I installed Yosemite. I was loving it until I too went to watch something on Netflix last night and kept getting the constant message about installing Silverlight, which I tried to do several times over with the same failed result. Your comment above explains what is happening so I guess I was hoping you could possibly provide an update on the plug-in alternative. Thanks.

          Sam

It's Netflix's fault to use a discontinued plugin in their website.

Found out the other week Sky Go (which uses Silverlight) doesn't work with Opera. I have to use Safari instead.

So aeyoun... it's been almost a 16 months since your snarky response. How long is "very soon" as your intermediate period has pretty much gone well beyond intermediate at this point?

@hericp Netflix support has been implemented a long time ago in Opera for anyone on OS X 10.9 or newer, and I am myself a very avid user :). Are you having any problems accessing Netflix?

It may work on Opera, but it does not work on Opera Developer (Mac OS 10.11.5, OD 40.0.2288.0).

Rather odd, I would have thought that Developer would get the support first

@coldrick: Developer is our experimental stream and as such it breaks now and then and contains bugs (it's the price you pay for living on the edge!). The release notes for that particular snapshot (http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2016/07/opera-developer-40-0-2288-0-update/) mention that Netflix is broken in that build. Just wait for the next build (which will probably be out today or tomorrow), or if you're really impatient, use Beta or Stable for now.
