I have to move my Opera Mail 1.0 from an XP-computer to a windows 8.1-computer.
I have installed the program on drive D. But now the installation has placed the e-mail-folders on drive C. I want to place the e-mailfolders on drive D. In the same folder as the program. In that way I can make a backup and restore more easy. But how is this to be done?

If you installed as "USB install", then all data folders will be on the same drive as the program. Otherwise they end up in %APPDATA%, which is generally on your system drive.

You can launch the Opera Mail installer and click "options". Set the "install path" to "D:\Program Files (x86)\Opera Mail" for example and set "install for" to "Standalone Installation (USB)". That will put operamail.exe on the drive at "d:\Program Files (x86)\Opera Mail\operamail.exe" and the profile files (including the mail folder) in ""D:\Program Files (x86)\Opera Mail\profile".

Then, while that Opera is closed, you just replace all the files and folders (including the "mail" folder) in the "profile" folder with ones you have elsewhere on C.

This will making Opera Mail portable on the drive and will make it easier to back up. The only downside is that Opera Mail won't be set as the default mail client.

Now, the other way to do it is to just change the location of the mail folder. Edit "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Opera Mail\Opera Mail\operaprefs.ini" and put:

          [Mail]
Mail Root Directory=D:\wherever you want the mail folder.

Then, move the mail folder to D in that spot and start Opera Mail.

That way, Opers is still installed on C, but the mail folder is on D.

Another way to do is to set:

          [User Prefs]
Opera Directory=path to folder on d drive
Opera Local Directory=path to different folder on d drive

in operaprefs.ini. Or, if you're the only user account that's going to use Opera Mail on the system, you can specify it in operaprefs_default.ini in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera Mail". But, some files my still end up in the AppData folders on C. But, the mail folder should move to inside the Opera Local Directory path.

Depends on how you want to do it. If you just want to back up the mail folder more easily, just change its location.

If you don't care about Opera Mail being the default mail client, do the standalone installation way.

Note: Opera use to have command-line options to allow you to set a standalone installation as the default (as long as the drive doesn't change drive letters), but not sure if that works with operamail.exe or the Opera Mail installer. See http://shadow2531.com/opera/wiki/Windows Installer Command-Line Options - Browser - Opera Wiki.mhtml for the options though and see http://shadow2531.com/opera/wiki/How to Add Opera Mail to the Win7 8 Default Progams List - Mail Client ( M2 ) - Opera Wiki.mhtml for how to add Opera Mail to default programs in Windows 8.

Thank You. I have made an usb-installation. I learned now how.
The next an more difficult task is: how to move the information from my XP an onto my 8.1 machine. May be there is a standard procedure.

              WinXP -> Windows 8.1

              • Move "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Opera Mail" to "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming"

              • Move "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera Mail" to "C:\Users\user\AppData\Local"

That'll move all of your Opera Mail profiles to Win8. Then, just install Opera Mail in all the places you did before. For example, if you installed Opera Mail to "C:\Program Files\Opera Mail" on WinXP, install it to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera Mail on Win8 (or "C:\Program Files\Opera Mail" if you have the 32-bit version of Win8).

To convert the WinXP profile folders to a single "profile" folder like in a usb installation, just combine all the files and folders in "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Opera Mail\Opera Mail" and ""C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera Mail\Opera Mail" together in a folder named "profile". Then, put that "profile" folder in the installation folder of an Opera USB installation (deleting the existing "profile" folder in there first for example). Before you load Opera Mail again though, edit "profile/operaprefs.ini" and remove any lines with paths in them so that Opera Mail uses the default paths in the installation folder.
