@polo-naref Thanks! That did the trick! (Wish I could delete the prepopulated search engines like Bing, Amazon, Ebay).
How did you learn that?

@ginger1984 I have Opera on my Linux browser. I took a look Settings>search_engines. Unfortunately, search engines are not synced. So no way to use a desktop Opera to remove a search engine in android opera.
I added a search engine to the list of search engines.
How did I do that? I went to the website. I long-tapped on the search box. In the window that appears at the bottom, I chose "Add search engine...". That search engine now appears below the list prepopulated with Google, Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Amazon, eBay, iMdb, Wikipedia.
How do I remove the search engine I've just added?
I can't find a way to do it in the Settings.
Samsung S9+
Android Pie
Opera 53.0.2569.14117
Based on my chatting with an Opera user, the answer to my question is a happy Yes. Using Opera's VPN means the wifi/router hacker can't see the URLs I visit.
Does Opera's VPN prevent a hacker from seeing the HTTP (non-secure) sites I visit?
By "hacker", I mean the same thing that https://www.eff.org/pages/tor-and-https illustrates.
Still not working for me. What is wrong with my Opera?
jimunderscorep,
thanks. i had to enable advanced settings first. It was hard to see.
I used to be able to activate Opera Turbo mode in older versions. But I don't see it anymore in Settings.
Did the developers remove it? If so, why? And when will it be back?
I have "Download Chrome Extension" add-on, but i still can't download Chrome extensions
Opera
Version: 47.0.2631.80 - Opera is up to date

System: Linux Mint 18.2 (x86_64; X-Cinnamon)
I have Download Chrome Extension by Opera Software
https://addons.opera.com/en-gb/extensions/details/download-chrome-extension-9/
Version 2.3.0 is what I have.
But I still can't download/install Chrome extensions.
I go to Chrome Store (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/)
I find the extension I want.
I click the red "Add to Opera" button.
A pop-up message appears. It says "Unable to download extension package due the network error.
Check your internet connection and try again"
But I have no problems with internet connection. I've tried several Chrome extensions, and they all give the same error message. Please feel free to try it yourself.
thanks, Jim_P.
First two have the "Create Search Engine" option. The third doesn't.
It's available in the Search box in the corner, not where you indicated.
Why not? Software should make it easy for humans. We humans shouldn't have to work around software.
jim_p,

Why doesn't "Create Search Engine..." (when you right-click on a search box) appear when it should?
It does not appear in http://web.archive.org/.
Happily, "Create Search Engine..." appears in https://web.archive.org/web/20170807102201/http://www.fsf.org/

bidoux,

I want to add a rule to Opera's built-in adblocker.
||wibbitz.com^*/embed.js
How do I add it? In third-party adblockers, you can create/add your own rules. I don't want to resort to a third party adblocker.
In Settings>Images, we can disable images. I disable images when I'm on a metered (expensive) Internet connection. I assume that anyone who disables images probably also wants to disable videos.
Why does this Wibbitz video load and play?
For example, http://www.nationalreview.com/article/449526/afghan-refugees-rape-jihad-europe .
I use uBlock instead and see no popups.
browzer1,
thank you for your comment. On Firefox, I use uBlock Origin. But I thought using an adblock extension with Opera when Opera already has a built-in adblocker would slow down my websurfing.
Anyway, within Opera's built-in adblocker, I subscribed to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/reek/anti-adblock-killer/master/anti-adblock-killer-filters.txt and the "Please disable adblocker" wall is now gone.
jimunderscorep,
thank you for your comment. I did as you said and now the pop-up "Please disable your adblocker message is gone! Thank you.
Or install some regular adblock extension like ublock origin
On Firefox, I have uBlock Origin installed. But wouldn't Opera's speed be hampered by downloading an adblocker extension, as opposed to just subscribing to the text file you helpfully linked to?
I do not know what is different between the 2 lists you mention.
I don't know much, but I do know that the Adblock Killer list/textfile is better with at least two websites.
