The "controlled folder access" feature in the Windows 10 Defender is absolute rubbish. I eventually switched it off as I got so tired of having to endlessly manually add exceptions to it.
It doesn't even let things access the desktop FFS, and the desktop, like all other Windows folders deemed critical by Microsoft, cannot be excluded from the feature. Considering that virtually all installers expect to write shortcuts to the desktop, which this feature now blocks, seems to indicate to me that Microsoft didn't really think this feature through!
