If Opera can't find favicon for some URL, it will search for it online (and leave empty space). It's the same in Opera bookmarks manager.
This creates noticeable delay compared to other favicons loaded from cache, and if site really doesn't have favicon, Opera will give default one.
Why not initially put default one , and then search for it online.
If Opera finds favicon for specific page, it can silently replace it, if not, nothing changes...

Also, it searches for those favicons every time, and there are many sites that don't have it.
