Problem is that when there's a significant delay, there is sometimes no indication that the request was transmitted. If there's no indication that the request was transmitted, it's difficult to understand if anything's happening.

My suggestion is that there should be some small type of feedback that the request was recognized. Then, if I have to wait for a response, at least I can be sure that it will be forthcoming.
