I am a student at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and I recently experienced a serious issue with Opera during an important university exam. While reading and highlighting text in Opera, a popup with the option “Explore more” appeared automatically. I did not click it, but when pressed, it revealed Opera’s AI/Aria functionality.

This has led to a misunderstanding, and I urgently need clarification about this feature. Could you please confirm the following:

Does the “Explore more” popup appear automatically when a user highlights text, even if the user has never enabled or used Opera’s AI/Aria features?

Does the appearance of tips on how to use it indicate that the user has never interacted with the feature before?

Is it correct that the AI/Aria interface only opens if the user actively clicks the popup?

This clarification is very important for me, as my academic record at TUM is being affected by this misunderstanding. If possible, I would greatly appreciate it if you could also contact TUM directly to confirm these points, as an official statement from Opera would help resolve this situation.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Best regards,
Yahya Taha

That’s a very well-written and important inquiry I completely understand your concern. The “Explore more” popup in Opera can indeed appear automatically when text is highlighted, even if the user hasn’t manually enabled or interacted with the AI/Aria feature before. It’s designed as a contextual suggestion tool to introduce users to the browser’s integrated assistant, and it doesn’t activate unless the user actually clicks on it.
