Observed this on multiple websites. New password fields are locked not allowing any override. Other browsers enable reset PWs on same websites with no problem. Disabling "offer to fill passwords" allows a work around. This appears to be a bug in latest Opera version running on Windows 11.

I can confirm that part.

-Once these fields are filled, it is not possible to override the generated password with the password of your choice.
-The fields are locked and the only possible action is Continue. Opera saves the generated passwords

I can't confirm that with the few sites I tested (not 2FA though). I can start typing in the password field and my entered characters are inserted no problem. If I have less than 6 characters, click out of the field and click back in it, Opera will show a suggested password again, but if I type, it'll add more characters to what I previously type.

One thing that was weird was that after a bit, Opera stopped autofilling a generated password and instead just started showing a tooltip with an item to insert a generated password (aka, the old way). Had to start with a new profile to get that new way back.

I can confirm that disabling the flag I mentioned previously does disable the automatic autofill of generated passwords. Couldn't find any way to turn just that off.

Have to admit, the automatic-ness of it is very annoying.

So, I'm wondering if 2FA has something to do with it. But, I have a feeling it's something with certain sites.

As a test, goto https://example.com/, hit ctrl + shift + i to open the developer tools and make sure you're on the Elements tab. Then, right-click on <body> and choose "edit as HTML". Then delete everything in the body and paste in:

<form action="login.html" method="post"><input type="password" name="password">
<input type="password" name="passconfirm"><input type="submit"></form>

Then, hit ctrl + enter to apply.

Then click in the first password field. Does that field get locked for you too?

-Enter the URL of a bank or health care company that you already have an account with (It's possible it needs to be a site that requires 2 factor authentication but I'm not sure)
-Navigate to the website's login screen. This varies depending on the website.
-Instead of signing in, click on "forgot password" or "new password" or "reset password" . This varies by site.
-Enter your existing user ID
-Follow directions for 2 factor authentication

You can goto the URL
opera://settings/clearBrowserData
, switch to "Advanced", set the time range to "all time" and check only autofill form data. That should wipe out everything at
opera://settings/addresses
just in case a password was stored there by accident. For good measure, you can goto the URL
opera://about
, take note of the "profile" path, close Opera and delete the "Web data" folder in the profile folder. This will wipe out your payment methods at
opera://settings/payments
too.

Then, for good measure, goto the URL
opera://settings/clearBrowserData
, switch to advanced again, set time range to all again, check only "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files" and clear that data. This will log you out of all sites. Then, for good measure, goto the URL
opera://about
, take note of the "profile" path, close Opera and delete the "Cookies" file in "Network" folder in the profile folder.

Then, in Opera, goto the URL
opera://password-manager/passwords
. For any login info you don't want anymore, delete it. For any entries that have the wrong info (like the wrong password), fix the entries or delete them so that you can choose to save them again when you successfully log into those sites again.

Then, as far as Opera is concerned, you should be good to go. You'll just need to log back in to your sites.

As for account for a site you have where you don't like the password set for the account, log into the site and change the password with the method the site provides. If you don't know the password, use the site's "forgot password" link.

Also, for now, until Opera removes it, you can disable the "Password management popup" flag at the URL
opera://flags/#password-management-popup
and restart opera to get the old password prompt back.

You can also search for
password
and the URL
opera://flags
and make sure the other password-related flags are set to "Default".

Otherwise how would the site know the change is valid. Once changed on the website, it can then be editted in Opera PW settings but not before. These critical websites like health and financial are not going to cede PW security control to a browser on a laptop that anyone can hack into. That's why they implemented 2FA so that they can double check the identity of the user initiating the change. Most financial and healthcare sites now require 2FA and that can't be handled by browser settings, only manually.
