Even when both browsers are based on the same foundation and people very obviously need things that extensions provide?

Being based on the same engine doesn't mean that both can use the same extensions. There are things that Opera has that Chrome hasn't and vice-versa.

And what security reasons?

Extensions in Opera's Extensions page are verified before going available in the page while extensions from external sources may or may not be verified.

That's one of the reasons for Opera to difficult the installation of extensions from unknow sources since a long time.

Making Opera support Chrome extensions by default would be a huge nightmare if something broke that was 'officially' supported. As it is its quite easy to port most extensions over to Opera and any developers that have fails to do so by now probably don't care enough to bother. Most of the major extensions have native Opera releases already. Either way, Opera is not ignoring extensions. Ignoring and not supporting someone else's stuff out of the box are not the same thing.

It seems to me that Opera once before went the route of ignoring extensions for too long. Didn't work out well for them.

And what security reasons? They could probably improve on security, if anything, as compared to using an old extension provided by "theprovider."

For me it doesn't make any sense that Opera could allow installing extensions for other browser natively. Also, it's well known that it doesn't happen due to security reasons.

It can't be that difficult for Opera to implement this, as has been proven by another browser recently.

after you install "download chrome extension" extension from opera addons page
go to chrome web store and find what you want (I tested it with first that I stumble upon)
there will be red button saying add to Opera--- click it
a top bar will show with info that extension is disabled (because is not Opera native), and there is a button GO at the far right
click GO and it will take you to Opera extensions page where you need to confirm installation (click install)

Which one of these steps didn't worked?
