The classic tabs extension

https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/classic-tabs/?display=en

gives you a setting where you can open all tabs at the end of the tab bar. Alternatively you can chose to open your new tab next to the active tab.

Its like asking why Ford F-15 and the Lincoln Mark LT are so similar...

Its not really true because same engine (as browser renderer) can propel many types of vehiceles or machines regardless what bodyworkd do they have (as features and GUI). Its just matter of casing, gears and egineering. If you dont use your own engine design (Presto) you just have to use some conversions so it will do what you nned.

Grabbing an extension to accomplish this would be great if there were a decent add-on community for Opera.

There are lots of extensions at https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/ although it's not exactly a community i think.

Man, what happened?

One of the differences is the community and support - Opera's is much more discourteous and unwelcoming.

Its like asking why Ford F-15 and the Lincoln Mark LT are so similar... because they are the same truck. As for the reasons why they have changed renderers, its been discussed many, many times before and its easy to find if you look.
