<![CDATA[black rectangle]]>i've just installed the new stable version for debian, which is 27.0.1689.54. there seem to be quite a lot of exciting new features, for instance the under no circumstances to be removed google annoyance is spread over all the speed dial page's width, quite a feat. however, something puzzles me: what's behind the black rectangle i'm now getting every time i open a new page (or close a tab)? is it the NSA? should i smile & wave, because am i'm being photographed through it?
the rectangle is not cklickable - which of course i tried out first thing - and it disappears after ... yes, after what? it sometimes stays, then it disappears after a couple of seconds, at other times after the first event. i suppose it's just a chrome-issue indicating that for the chosen ones there will appear a menu or something to interact with. at any rate, it's a trace of sloppy programming.
i just thought you might want that feedback.

as for the ominous reactangle: it always comes in the same size. which is why i still suppose it's a chrome issue - as though some widget's constructor is called and then the destructor immediately afterwards, not recognizing that some resources have been allocated: the area the widget "thinks" it would be occupying has been copied to memory, but isn't placed back on the screen. hence the black "nothing".

there is of course still another possibility, at least in theory. as i said in this thread i'm using hardware acceleration in opera-stable only, but not in the developer version, and in opera-developer the rectangle doesn't appear. but however esoterical this might be for an explanation, it doesn't explain why the effect appears in the manner it does.

In the old arcade games from Konami, pressing those buttons on the controls would let you access hidden features. Just try it.

and as for the search box: you're kidding, aren't you? where am i to enter "Power user mode"? and what is a konami code?

Several new settings will appear, including one to diable the Speed dial search box.

If the rectangle is scrollable, might it be an extension that isn't working properly?

i am of course not an expert on debian (sid in my case) or the X window system. but i find it hard to believe that this odd effect, which appeared with a new version of opera, should have something to do with X or debian.

I don't have any black rectangle, though I have heard there were some issues in newer versions of Debian.
