I.e. when I just open a link reader mode is not available, but when I open the same link in a new tab (no history) reader mode becomes available for the same page.
Is this OK?

Thanks.

By "any given page" I meant pages that contain an article, not the main page or other article-list type pages. I obviously do not expect reading mode availability on those pages. Sorry for not being precise enough.
Thanks.

Maybe I did not make myself clear:
For any given webpage on the site I mentioned

reader mode is not available when there is page history in the tab the page is opened in (link was opened by simply tapping on it) and

reader mode is available when there is no page history in the tab the same page is opened in (link was opened in new tab).

Go and try it!
So, why is this the case?

Same on other Chromium browsers.
