Most major software sites will say "Certified virus-free" and will tell you if a program includes ads. If you don't see that on a site ... find another source.

I won't say to avoid all free software ... I do use Irfanview, VLC, and of course Opera. But I know where I'm getting them from. And I opt out of all offers to install anything not related to the program I'm downloading - no browser toolbars, no other browsers, no security scans (half of those are fake anyway), etc.

Downloading "free" software is probably the most common path for infection by unwanted adware or spyware software - it can come bundled with the free download. That is how BlockAndSurf usually spreads itself. As @sgunhouse has suggested, follow his referenced site's instructions about how to remove the BlockAndSurf infection. In the future, be extremely careful about where you obtain free software... look for sites that certify their downloads to be unbundled or malware-free.

Googling the name brings up several pages with instructions on how to remove it, this one seems pretty thorough (though the English is not perfect).
