I can drag them to and fro in the bar, or up and down in the drop-down lists. I cannot move them from list to bar or vice-versa, and in any case, moving them one by one will take for ever.

If you had no folders in your Opera Bookmarks in Opera 12.16, then you will need to add a folder.

Right-click on any blank area of the Bookmarks Bar, and add a Folder. If you keep the names short you can fit more on the toolbar so that it never fills up and you never need to use the dropdown. Drag and drop your bookmarks into the appropriate folder. Then you can sort the folders alphabetically afterwards.

What "folder" are we talking about? All I have is a list of Bookmarks across the bar at the top and more on a drop-down menu at the side. I have gone through every menu I can find.

I would like to think I'm not completely useless or unintuitive with software, but I really am stuck.

Thank you. I have no idea how to do what you describe. It seems to show I can click on some bar (but it doesn't look like the Bookmarks bar). If I try to do it on the Bookmarks bar, I don't get the drop-down menus you show. Sorry to be inept. C.

You have to click on the folder to get that kind of menu. (that include any subfolder you want to sort)

just to be clear...right click on any folder or subfolder will offer you menu with "Sort alphabetically"
