<![CDATA[Opera Mini 8 beta for Android]]>Hi all,

During the past months, we gave a lighter look and feel to our mobile browsers. In the same spirit, we have made a new version of Opera Mini for Android to look and feel just as great.

This beta version marks the start of a transition for Opera Mini on Android. Using the full-featured Opera for Android as a starting point, we created a lightweight browser that runs on Android 2.3 and higher.

The beta shares many of its bigger sibling's features, including data-saving compression, bookmarks, Speed Dial folders, private tabs, and bookmark syncing. Sharing user interface with the full-weight Opera allows us to expand Opera Mini's feature set faster than the current version.

Opera mini is the only usable browser in this situation. You must let users disable the "Discover" or they will be forced to use old versions.

  • The reload button should be placed on the navigation bar instead of the homepage button. (pretty annoying on the big version too)
  • A smaller font option since the fonts are still to big on smaller screens with the current "small font size"
  • Option to turn off the homescreen
  • Full screen option like the one on the old mini
  • Auto complete on the address bar needs to come back.

    • that's it for now. For the most part, I like the new look. Some sites are displayed much better and the "constant reloading on clicking a link" bug seems to be gone so this is a much better mini. I just want the few features I listed to be implemented.
    OT: why the hell is it so difficult editing a post on here? It's impossible placing a cursor in between letters..

    Do you have any proof to back up your theory? Cause from my view both use the same protocol to send data and they both do it in similar manner. I might be able to believe that it needs a couple of kB more on start but afterwards... hmm... If you find this 'a lot' that you describe, please report a bug through our bug tracking system. It may be that you have some unique use case.

    Maybe the extra kB goes to 'home' which updates it's content everytime we're at it like right after opening Opera Mini or right after opening a new tab.
    It's the first thing there, y'know..
    How much data does 'home' consume in a session? I wonder..
    Or maybe it just because the new data usage counter not divided for current session and total like the old Opera Mini?

    To be honest I'm not enjoying 'home' at all, I disabled it a day after it got on opera mini and never look back.
    Now you shove it in our faces and thought we all should be happy with it, well, I'm not.

    there's so many sophisticated features in Opera Mini which we love and enjoy all this time that not made it in this new Mini Beta, and I think it called downgrading.
    In that case, the next OM won't be my favorite.

    I hope my 2 cents worth something for the development.

    yes, data consumption is a disaster compared to the v7 opera mini. i hope this bullsh.t vill never released as a stable update for opera mini. higher version number but eating a lot more mobile data ...is this innovation or evolution?

    if this will be a permanent change, you shold give a final version of v7.x that google play would mot want to upgrade to v8

    i dont really understand u opera developers, really......
    i used opera beta sync , after i loged in to my sync account with opera mini beta, nothing happened....

See http://s24.postimg.org/u7xrg8sid/308.png with small fonts. Fonts are lighter and scale two sizes (Chrome alike), page loading feels material.

    my suggestion for improvement :

    • night mode / brightness control (pretty favourable feature)
    • download dialog (why is it gone?)
    • option to show / hide menu / navigation bar (it would be very nice to permanently show tablet layout)
    • startpage option for home / speed dial (I prefer be greeted with speed dial)
    • color theme picker (white is good but everyone have their own favourite colour)
    • add rss feeds to opera sync (it's utterly irritating to lose your list when switching to a new device)
      -and ultimately import everything from opera link to opera sync so we can feels like home right away

    Yep this list is really good.
    currently I'm missing download dialogue with ability to rename file
    and RSS reader which is not there.
    Also Opera should sync. feeds It was really time taking for me to transfer all feeds from my symbian phone to new android phone 😞

    the bookmark sync does not work with opera link, it will work with the current opera beta for android and opera for pc.

    That is right, Opera Sync and Link are different.
