Operamail suddenly very broken

It's hard to categorise this, but I can no longer read emails properly, or find them again once read.
If I double-click on an email to open it, instead of showing "from:" the sender, it appears in a window as though I was forwarding the message (but without the FWD: in the subject). So the sender's name is lost, and it appears to originate from me. Also, any links in the email are no longer clickable.
Once read, in this broken fashion, the message vanishes from my list of received mails. I can label the message (To Do) before reading it, but the list of mails matching that label is blank (instead of 1).
I CAN find it by searching for a keyword, but it appears in the results with a pen symbol next to it rather than an envelope. The label is given next to it, but I can only find it in "All Messages", not when searching "To Do".
It's quite unusable, and very odd.

SOME of the messages have turned up upder DRAFTS - but not all of them. (Hence the pen symbol I guess)

Is this with Opera Mail 1.0 or the Opera Mail built into Opera 12 browser suite?

When I had major breakdown in my email twice in the past, I removed all the accounts and then re-imported them. The instructions I think can be found somewhere here: http://shadow2531.com/opera/wiki/
Search: "How to Fix a Corrupted Mail Folder":
Opera seems to have so changed everything I don't know how it will work in the latest version, but it worked back in Opera 12.
