Right-click on the selected tabs and choose 'Create Island'

Sorry, but no, no and no. Sometimes I truly don't understand you. Why would you make it so complicated? Just to remind you, 13 years (!!!) ago you introduced Tab Stacking. The simplest way to merge tabs together. Drag & Drop. And now? "Hold this key, click on all tabs, then right click and select ...."

Listen to us. I've been using Opera for over 20 years. Don't complicate things unnecessarily. It's awful. Change it ASAP.

I can confirm that you can create a tab island by moving one tab over the other for ~1 second.
A shared background will then appear behind them, after which you can release the tab.

I have example.com, arstechnica.com, and hardforum.com tabs on the tab bar. example.com is focused. So, I ctrl + left-click arstechnica.com to select it too and repeat for hardforum.com. There are then 3 tabs selected. Then, I right-click on any of those selected tabs and choose "create tab island". That works fine for me and an island is created where those 3 tabs are moved into it.

At the URL
opera://settings/userInterface
, I have "Automatically create tab islands" enabled. If I goto https://forums.opera.com/category/11/opera-for-windows, right-click a link for a thread and choose "open in new tab", an island is automatically created where the current tab and that new tab are moved into it. If I open another thread link in a new tab, that one is added to the existing island.

So, all is working fine here for what it's worth.

A tab island is created itself - effortlessly. Yes, you need to browse in a pattern when you, for example, scan a news page and open a couple of articles in new tabs to read one by one, or you search in Google and you open several results in new tabs. We learnt from our research that this is a very popular behaviour amongst users.
