It said there was an update available. I clicked on the link to download and install it. It never really seemed to start the download and said there was an error (unfortunately I did not write the error down, but it said it could not automatically recover from the error and there was now a button that said "manual install". I clicked on that but it gave the same error. I closed opera and reopened it and went to check for updates and it now said my version of opera was up to date. That is when I pulled the version number 12.17 (32 bit). Since it acted so weird, I used another browser to check for the latest version of opera. I downloaded and installed it (that is what I am using here) and it now shows that I am using:

Version:	25.0.1614.63 - Opera is up to date
Update stream:	Stable
System:	Windows 8.1 64-bit (WoW64)

What happened that my opera version 12.17 tried to update, failed and then told me my opera was up to date?

The new version 25 is a valid and safe browser/

Yes, there is a version 25 of Opera browser for Windows.

Though I'm not too sure about the way in which it was installed.

Do you have any anti-virus software installed on your computer, if so, can I enquire want it's called ?, does its name begin with the letter 'V' by any chance ?.

I don't know for the first part, but actually, there are two different browsers by the same name now. The ultimate version of the first (legitimate) Opera browser is 12.17.
About the same time as 12.16 was released, Opera Software started a new project - scarcely related to the first-born Opera project but assigned the same name, with another engine, totally different layout, etc.
The two may interact very limitedly, and the renowned first browser must be normally unaware of the subsequent contrivance let alone considering any updates to the latter.
However, there've been issues about some sort of such "upgrade" - which've been discussed in this forum.
