Make Opera HEIC compatible?

I tried to get a HEIC extension for Opera (seen as for some reason it still doesn't natively support a file format invented several years ago), but typing HEIC into the search field in the extensions download page produces no results.

You can monitor https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843310#c16 if you like.
I don't know of any extensions.

I see there's this web page that allows you to choose local heic files to display them and save them as png/jpeg files. Not a solution, but a workaround you might try.

@burnout426 I can always convert my own to upload. But this is utterly ridiculous a browser not supporting such a common format. Or maybe if enough people stop supporting it, Apple will go away! What we need is a proper open source format, like Jpeg XL.

@hucker It's not a common format. I've never heard of it until this discussion started.
If you have a friend with an Iphone, you'll have heard of it. There are many Iphones. Apple took on this new "standard" for jpeg before it became mainstream. My Samsung phone will save in it, but more sensibly it isn't the default. It's good in principle, it's half the size and less lossy, but until it's supported everywhere, it's pointless. There seems to be some kind of charge for using it and it's big brother HEVC for video, which VLC manage to ignore as usual, so that's probably putting most companies off. JPEG XL sounds better. Free and even tighter compression.

@hucker Like I said, when it really becomes mainstream and a significant amount of people, running different OS, start using the format, then maybe browsers will start supporting it
For now it seems to be something for a very specific public and may not worth the efforts to develop support for it

I have an iphone. Whenever I share a pic to someone (via text or messenger etc.), it gets shared as a jpg. I only see the heic file version of my pics when accessing my phone via USB and extracting pics with a utility for example. Even in that case, the jpegs are right beside them.

@burnout426 Maybe they changed it on your version. My friend sends me photos by email from his Iphone and they're heic unless he remembers to convert them for me. Probably depends on the program you share them with, I believe he uses the default Apple email system.
