<![CDATA[PDF Open with default system app]]>Why do Opera and all Chrome-based browsers not have the option to open PDF files with the default system application? In my case, it is Acrobat, but it could be any app. I often need to rearrange the pages before saving or printing the PDF file and the built-in readers do not allow editing of the file. It would be very helpful if Chrome-based browsers would allow choosing default system apps for all file types. If Opera and all Chrome-based browsers added this option I would drop Firefox as my default browser, but Firefox is the only browser that allows default apps.

Or maybe, idk, maybe to let the users have flexibility in what they choose to use? Seems very pompous to claim that what you have works perfect for the needs of everyone.

No it's not. It's the easiest way for Opera since they don't have to do anything, but it is absolutely not the easiest way for the user to open a pdf in their viewer of choice. I don't understand why throughout this post (and others) you defend what Opera has done as if they make no mistakes nor have no room for improvement. Users come to forums to find solutions to problems, report issues, make suggestions for improvements, etc. To essentially tell them that they are just complaining for no reason and to be happy with what they have is counterproductive at best. If this was the only response given there would be no need for a forum and users would abondon the browser.

My work is main in browsers due to many SAS stuff that my organization has adopted. Small feature changes can have an huge imapct to my daily workflow.

That being said, I am able to do this now in a Chrome based browser. Found via the downloads menu /page - I get the options when right-click of: Open, Open with System Viewer, Always Open with System Viewer, Show in Folder, and Cancel. I am not sure if this a stock Chrome, as I do enable some flags/settings that other might not have. This is Chrome version 110.0.5481.104 (Official Build) (64-bit).

So maybe there is some hope that Opera (in my case GX) could get this in the future.

Also, if the software can handle the file, it doesn't make sense to allow using a third party software to open that file. Unless you are admitting that your software is not that good in handle that file type/extension.

It is just inconvenient. You may think that 'what difference does one additional click make' - but often such minor things cause people switch applications. Me as software dev knows that very well 😞

Well, I personally can manage that additional click - I open PDFs rarely, but I can understand OP concerns. Of course chromium based browsers will not change that behaviour, we should be happy that we can open PDFs outside of browser at all 😞 🙂

I think it has to do with Google/Alphabet not wanting to lose out on its data mining of everything we do online.
