I had similar pinboard issues a year or two ago. You might be able to find the thread I started at the time, but eventually I gave up because someone who replied turned out to be rather perverse and unhelpful, so I gave up.

What I did learn is that pinboards are stored in the "bookmarks" file. On my ancient Win7 PC this is located at:

C:\Users\Playtech\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable

This file seems to back itself up to bookmarks.bak in the same location, though my attempts to restore pinboards at that time were unsuccessful (like yourself, I'm just a button-pusher with no technical aptitude). However, both files are included in my daily backup routine.

The other thing I learned is that if Opera is set to delete cookies on exit it will also delete your pinboards. How stupid is that? Consequently i never delete cookies and they just accumulate—probably in the thousands now, and there's no way I can see to select which to delete and which to retain.

It's a crying shame that such a useful feature should be so vulnerable to unintended deletion without warning. Even after all this time pinboards are still shown as "beta", and it appears nothing has been or is being done to rectify the issue and make it more robust. This reminds me of the old English proverb about "spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar".

Sorry I can't be of more help. It would be good if someone who really understands these issues would contribute to the discussion.

I am a Japanese user.

My pinboard also disappeared, and it happened on October 15th at around 22:10 JST. I use two separate profiles, and I was trying out the pinboard feature with the second one since the beginning of this month. Despite not allowing cookies and using the GX Cleaner of OperaGX more than twice, my pinboard was fine for over 10 days. I restarted it multiple times and checked it, each time finding it secure, which made me relieved.

I knew it was a beta version and I did not use any external cleaning software, nor did I back it up. I didn’t use account synchronization or link sharing either. I understand my faults, and even knowing it was a beta version, I never expected it to disappear so easily. I thought that being in beta would only lead to minor display issues, text corruption, or disordered save sequences, but I accept that bugs are inevitable and I appreciate the effort of the developers who are working hard for us.

However, this was unexpected; it disappeared with just one restart. I have no idea which folder or file to back up from the Explorer’s user folder. I’m just an ordinary person with no technical knowledge and can’t do anything about it. I only managed to find a possible save location after discovering this forum. After realizing it was gone, I backed up all my user folders. If there’s a way to recover it, I would like to know. When I restored the tabs from the browser history, it stated that this pinboard was deleted, which saddened me deeply, as it was against my will.

I read that the pinboard information might be hidden in the bookmark file from this forum, so I tried it with a new profile, but I could only copy the bookmarks. I won’t give up hope; I am waiting for the developers to fix it so that my and everyone else's pinboard can be restored. I wish for the safety and recovery of all our pinboards.

I generated this text using chatGPT.

Losing your Pinboards on Opera can be frustrating, especially during its Beta phase. Typically stored locally, check your Opera profile folder (e.g.
, AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable on Windows) for any cached data. Ensure your browser is updated and try restarting Opera to see if they reappear. For ongoing issues, reporting bugs to Opera's support or forums can help (opera.com/support). Backup tips for Pinboards are crucial; https://www.opera.com/features/pinboards consider saving bookmarks or exporting data periodically to prevent loss.

Are you kidding me? What kind of support is this?
I want to hear: "file in folder: "F:\Users"your account name"\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Default\Bookmarks"
copy to the newly installed opera application to disk: "C:\Users"your account name"\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Default\Bookmarks"
And you'll have your pinboards back.
But there is nothing like that here! And I ask why? Opera must have it stored like that somewhere, and don't tell me it isn't. It must be stored somewhere, I don't understand why I have the Opera Software folder on my computer, why are there so many files and data there? It must be stored somewhere in them damn it!
You can at least extract it manually from the bookmarks file, but it's a terrible job, I'll tell you that.

My scenario is a bit different in that it appears as I believe I was synchronizing my pinboards.

It appears that went to remove Opera browser from a computer I was giving back to someone, I cleared all site information on that computer and it synchronized that clearing across to my main machine as well, which was logged out at the time.

That was a couple months ago, and I just noticed the missing pinboards now.

Luckily, I have a backup of my whole computer from Oct 2022, and after hours of scouring it, it seems the pinboard content is stored in the IndexedDB folder under pinboard.opera.com.

Steps to restore were:

Shut down opera

Go to the backup of IndexedDB/pinboard.opera.com* (2 of them)

Copy those 2 folders into the current IndexedDB/pinboard.opera.com*

restart opera

Voila, got my pinboards back.

I'll be backing this folder up regularly now.

I Finally figured out how to preserve my pinboards. I hope it works for you. Others have posted solutions that have worked for them, and didn't work for me. However, this is what did work for me, so give it a go, it's very easy. Save your Opera Pinboard cookies. If you go into your settings, under security and privacy, you will find your cookies, you can pick and choose which ones to allow. They remain safe when running your cleaner if you allow them. I use software that runs a tune up, and I can go in there and pick and decide which to keep. OR you can in security/privacy cookies allow all and turn on don't allow third party. Allowing the cookies that you use Opera, Facebook, Amazon etc will also help keep you signed in. So whether you are using a software to run an internet cleaner or within the browser itself, put your known cookies that you know are safe in the keep basket, and toss the others. The third party cookies they are the way you're tracked. I tested this try with clearing my data within the browser, then I did the same using my software, and all 3 times, my pinboards remained, I remained signed into Opera and I'm a happy camper. I was pretty angry with Opera for my work disappearing. I'm still backing things up because I don't know if it's truly fool proof. But for now, saving those cookies and putting them on the keep/safe list is what worked 100% for

Opera should seriously Not advertise something that is in Beta without making you fully aware. Yes, btw, my data is synced. This is the 3rd time losing the Pinboards, dodging everything of not clearing this, not clearing that.. etc. So, after losing that much data and things for my students that Opera totes you can collaborate with Pinboards..lol no you can't ...
