<![CDATA[Affirm pop-up showing up on some shopping related pages]]>every single page i load on ebay.com has this dumb popup that is apart of the browser it doesn't matter if i close it it always loads back up when i load a new ebay page. how do i disable it completely? this wasn't a problem until today for some reason.

I use an Adblocker for most BS, but this built in & could not be blocked.
Co-workers have also stopped using Opera as most of them do not have rights to edit the AppData files (I do)
So in one fell swoop Opera lost us as a Company

The "Display promotional notifications" was enabled when I checked after the affirm popup breached my annoyance threshold. I unchecked it and restarted Opera. I didn't see the popup when I reloaded the site I was on. Granted that's only one data point, but I didn't see any other mention of Promotional other than @ttlgs comment

Locked down the file as you suggested. Still no popups! Thanks.

I am at 21+ days (with this fix), a few new Opera updates have happened and my fix is still working for me. no more affirm popups anywhere and that file (affirm_whitelist.json) is still locked and empty at 0 bytes.

Firefox is now default. Reinstalled Roboform, EditThisCookie, added my VPN.... all running smooth and faster (know not why faster!?) Maybe as I add extensions, it might slowdown. Thank you Opera for making me look. All my best wishes.

I cleaned my registry of <affirm>, cleaned all instances of <affirm> in my user directories, in Windows.... rebooted each time, after a couple of browsing, Lowes, Home Depots, eBay, Amazon.... etc..... Spent too much time trying to fix this, while the Chinese are busy being productive. Off to Firefox land. Bye bye Opera.

I only changed the file to "read only" and so far that as fixed the issue. I also went into Opera then Settings - Advanced -and unclicked the "receive promotional speed dials, bookmarks and campaigns" button

resolved it by deleteing the file "affirm_whitelist.json" in the AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable directory

So Far, this has worked for me as well. Will it Stay fixed? Time will tell, as I haven't been on the computer much today.

Note: The first time I deleted that file, it didn't solve the issue. So I decided to do a search within Windows Explorer for anything with Affirm in it, and found two more instances of that file! So in all I deleted 3 instances of it, and again, So Far, so good!

I'm sick of advertisers in this country and on the internet that think the way to gain business is to subject people to a constant barrage of their BS.

]]>https://forums.opera.com/post/280945https://forums.opera.com/post/280945Thu, 12 May 2022 17:00:00 GMT<![CDATA[Reply to Affirm pop-up showing up on some shopping related pages on Thu, 12 May 2022 15:27:29 GMT]]>@mewquest also check the read-only attribute. this fix has been working for me for 12 hours+ have rebooted pc to confirm my fix is working properly. wipe contents (with text editor) of C:\Users<your username here>\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable\affirm_whitelist.json keeping the file intact. take ownership of file (if you are not already the owner). remove inheritage of file with the checkbox "include inheritable permissions from this object's parent". then remove all groups and users from the file. then check the read-only attribute. opera can now no longer access this file as you are the sole owner and even you can't really do anything with the file. you'd need to add permissions back into the file for you to modify it (or delete it).
