Can't sign in to sync data.

The drop-down from the upper-right user avatar shows "Synchronization has encountered a problem" and offers a "Sign In" button. When attempting to sign in, a window
appears requesting, first, username, and then password with a large "Sign In" button. Clicking Sign In does nothing.
I searched for this issue at opera.com, and found several topics but no solutions other than resetting Opera (and losing much tailoring). I tried wiping browser cache and cookies, reloading the page, restarting Opera, updating Opera, disabling extensions, and blah, to no avail.
Then I remembered that time when Opera would not update itself over its own built-in VPN. So I disabled Opera's VPN and easily signed in to Sync.
To test, I enabled VPN, restarted Opera, and it's still synched.
