I have to visit the site instead and then use long press. Trying it on DuckDuckGo brings up an option to view the file without having to go to the site.

Is this a change brought on by Google changing things on their end or is there another reason? And is there any chance of it coming back?

On Chrome there is view image, that opens the image in a pop-up.
