<p dir="auto">I never suggest Ubuntu to people. I think Linux Mint is superior (I always go with Cinnamon desktop). For something even lighter, Bodhi Linux with the more robust AppPack iso. These are both based on Ubuntu, but without the telemetry collecting that Ubuntu loves to incorporate.</p>
<p dir="auto">I also really dislike the GNOME desktop.</p>
<p dir="auto">Anyway it's a thought, but I don't know how much trouble that would be for you.</p>

<p dir="auto">At this point you should check your Opera folders for opera_autoupdate file or something similar and delete it. Perhaps there's a file like this that was left over from your previous install that wasn't deleted.</p>
<p dir="auto">Doing a purge does not delete every single thing, just most everything.</p>

<p dir="auto">sudo apt purge opera-stable</p>
<p dir="auto">You would then install via the command line as previously posted.</p>
