Settings and support buttons are greyed out and search in emails shows "you're offline results may be limited".

I have a work around. Show cookies in use from the pulldown off the padlock. Select mail.google.com and click the Delete button. Reload the web page.

To restore it this time I just used ctrl+F5 to reload without cache rather than deleting the cookies for gmail.google.com. I can live with that.

My first attempt must have missed some cookies being set again. For my second I closed all tabs except Settings and that worked. I needed to wait for stable releases and there was no weekly update in late July.
