The add-ons may be checking for their own updates, and Sync would be checking if anything changed.

Have you disabled news in speed dial? Have you disabled prefetching of news for your personal news page? It may also be checking for updates to the ad-blocker and anti-tracking rules if those features are enabled.

Well, look at the things I mentioned, see which you're willing to disable and see what that does to your list.
