It's so with truOpera, at least.

They show as urls on a page when I sync Opera 23. They do not show on the Speed Dial thumbnail page.

Opera 23 should migrate some of your settings when installed.

I am afraid of losing the many thumbnails I have.

If your are talking about customized ones, then they will be lost as Opera Blink doesn't support custom thumbnails on SD. At least not on a easy way.
