Opera Mail (the standalone client) is basically Opera 12.17 without the browser part.

I'll definitely prefix the thread. As I did on this one except the name, Operamail should have been Opera Mail.

Opera Mail isn't being worked on anymore.
What? This just came out! They've given up on this already? Its pretty good and excellent for people used to the mail system built into Opera 12 and before. What are most Operamail users using now or contemplating?
It occurred to me that email needs to be divided into Incoming and Outgoing. I noticed that some aggregators are working like that. And it seems very smart. Incoming can monitor many accounts, hopefully even Instant Messaging and if you're really lucky, even SMS/Text messaging if you hate cell phones.

You can prefix the thread title with "Opera Mail - " in the Windows, Mac and Linux forums.

Opera Mail isn't being worked on anymore. This means that while your suggestion is a good idea, there's virtually zero chance that any improvements will be made.

There are a couple of things you can do though:

Compose a new message and click the wrench icon on the compose tab. It'll allow you to set the default outgoing account. You could set it to a dummy account (that you create) so that you always have to select the right account.

You can right-click in the mail panel and set "show messages from" to the account you're working with at the time so that only messages for that account show in "All Messages" etc. When you reply to a message, the From drop-down will default to that account. Just note that "show messages from" resets to "all" on startup of Opera. And, if you right-click on a toolbar, goto "customize", then "appearance", then "buttons", then "mail", you'll see an "All accounts" drop-down that you can drag to the mail panel toolbar so that you can easily see what account you're on and easily switch between accounts.
