I regularly end up with hundreds of open tabs and have to save them as a Speed Dial folder to alleviate the load on the machine. I then virtually never access those Speed Dial folders again. Scanning all the tabs to see which ones I want to close is a lengthy operation which I seldom feel like doing. In the meantime, I constantly use CTRL + SPACE (Instant Search), where I typically see a few tabs listed which I don’t need any more. Clicking on a check box next to each such tab to close it right away would be a simple method to keep the number of open tabs manageable, without having to spend time visiting them and possibly lose your train of thought.
