VPN is trusted ?

  • The Brazilian website Diolinux made a story about Opera questioning whether the VPN is reliable, and in the end concluded that the VPN is NOT reliable.

-> "Can I trust Opera VPN?

The short answer is: no. Opera VPN is completely free, and that means you have to profit in some way. The two most popular ways to profit from free services are through advertisements or by selling user data. "

I would then like to knoe: Is the VPN secure?

The link for the article in Portuguese is: https://diolinux.com.br/2020/08/opera-vpn-confiar-vpns-gratuitas.html#Eu_posso_confiar_na_Opera_VPN

  • They don't know. The profit is that you have to use the Opera browser, not the VPN itself. If the VPN were a separate product, that argument might make sense. But the whole argument collapses if the VPN is not a separate product.

  • @sgunhouse In the same article:
" Using your own VPN service, you guarantee that your entire network is protected (and not just the data through the browser), in addition to the possibility of using any other browser, such as Google Chrome or Firefox. "

The author of the article does not like Opera. 😔

  • Although it's pretty much rampant this days for some companies to sell users data, and even though i do not completely trust Opera; i do not think the argument made sense because they (Opera)made the VPN absolutely free so that you'd be moved to download or use there Browser - which is where they'll make profit. So if the VPN is a standalone app, then i may go with your thoughts.

  • I can't entirely agree with the argument as Opera is offering VPN free of cost.
