In the linked thread a workaround is proposed which works fine for me.

But In the linked thread there is also a statement that legal issues prevent the development team from providing a reliable solution.

Now I wonder, why the opera-beta version doesn't have such problems. Wouldn't be that in opposition to such claims bein the issue a legal problem? (I use PPA http://deb.opera.com/opera-stable)

The problem is fixed! Tried on various other sites, and videos play fine now. The issue on rockpapershotgun.com seems to be something else.

I am running the latest Opera on Linux Mint 20, but many (actually, I'd say all) videos outside YouTube don't play. For instance, on this page, there's just a grey rectangle where the video should be:

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2020/07/01/worms-rumble-will-ditch-turns-for-32-player-action/

I installed the cromium-ffmpeg snap and symlinked the libffmpeg.so from there to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/, but the problem persits.

How would I go about enabling video support in this latest version of Opera? any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

my bad, I had obviously a f$%&up in my packet manager! Opera told me in the Update dialog it's already at latest release when it obviously wasn't. After a manual upgrade of opera-stable on the commnd line now 69.0.3686.36 is running and codecs are working fine.

Sorry for the hassle, I just wanted to understand what's the problem to be able to make a educated problem solving decision.

Thanks again for your help!

And what is probably happening is the unmatch between the Chromium versions used by Opera and the one used in the codecs package.

Also it is said in your linked post that opera has no control over the ubuntu PPA, but as I said I use the PPA http://deb.opera.com/opera-stable

In light of this Ican't get my head around the fact that even after the latest update the stable opera is still broken.

PS.: Version is 68.0.3618.173

All the best!
