On both systems it is a lot slower than my other browsers. It already takes a lot longer to even start - and I have fast SSDs for both systems. Then it noodles forever before it gets a webpage. The IE, Firefox, Chrome and Chromium are a lot faster in all cases.

Is there a setting I might be missing that could speed it up?

I do not know what it is. But, currently Opera on my machine takes 10-15 seconds to start when I open it every time. But after 10-15 seconds, everything is working fine. It is just the start up of Opera that is taking a lot of time. I tried removing Opera and reinstalling but it has not made any difference. Currently using 19.0.1326.63 on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. There is definitely something with the sub-releases of updates to Opera 19 that is causing the browser to load up very slowly.

I thought he was talking about my profile here on this forum, lol.

I will try what you suggested. I never had any plug-ins or extensions - at least none that I put in. I am usually a pure vanilla person.

I'll try the newer releases but this behaviour I have noticed since a long time on older releases too. It must be something in Opera because it is the same problem on 2 completely different systems. And it cannot be my systems which have an i7, acres of RAM and always SSDs.

and latest Opera is 18 or is it 19 now... but it is available only on windows at the moment, linux version is coming later, and it is completely new beast and might not have the features you loved in old Opera. It has some other new features, should be faster and website compatability should be better now as it uses the same engine as Chrome. Try it out and see if you like it better. New Opera doesn't remove the old Opera so you can have them both side by side.
