Clicking the mailto link at https://sites.google.com/view/new-sites-testing/links/mailto-link opens up a Gmail compose page with the To field filled in with the address from the link.

It's not needed anymore though. Opera supports composing in Gmail on its own now. mail.google.com will ask you if you want it to handle mailto links. If you say yes, then clicking on mailto links will load in Gmail. If for some reason Gmail doesn't ask you, see https://reddit.com/r/operabrowser/comments/1ctpnxs/comment/l4f4wnt/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 for how to force it.
