<![CDATA[Problems with opening files in new version of Opera]]>Hi
In the latest version of Opera I somehow have missed the function of just "opening" files. Opera allways wants me do download files first before I can open them. I never had this problem with previous versions of Opera and do not have it with other browsers either.
What happens: When I find a file on the web which I want to open (e.g. å pdf) i usually just klick on it and then i will open directly. When doing the same in the new Opera the files allways will be downloaded on my computer before I can open them. Where can i change the settings for that in Opera?

Yep, now the user knows where the file is and can remove it after the install if (s)he wants. Before the file would stay on some (unknow) temp folder for who knows how long.

Neither way is better than the other... just a matter of preference. It's nice to have the choice (Run or DL) instead of being forced to DL. Choice is a good thing

... it could be (or not) that other browsers are using a PDF plug-in to open and render the PDFs without the need for a run/download/cancel dialog.

Firefox uses a pdf plug-in (Nitro, in my case), and the rendering of a pdf link is immediate upon left-clicking such a link, with no further browser dialog.

The issue is that there is no RUN option for downloads. If the user wants to just run an exe, such as a program update, there is no longer a pop-up with the options to Run or to Download. Opera now forces user to DL file to PC instead of conveniently running it directly from temp storage.

I took "open" as Run. Sorry if I'm on wrong topic-- may have jumped to conclusion. I have only a few pet peeves with new Opera, but Run is one of them. (I'm generally not a ranter)

The Run option used to be available with Opera & is a common usage functionality featured in other browsers. The post above by leevi has a link explaining this objectionable design decision. It is a pain in the butt!

Opera Blink doesn't offer that option, but you can double-click the file name when download starts and it will be opened when completed. That's the only thing I can think of.

You can't expect Opera open a MP4 video (yet) or a PDF if those formats are not supported natively (even if you drag and drop it from a folder, it will be ''Downloaded''). In the case of PDF, for that there are plugins and extensions, like PDF.js (https://addons.opera.com/es-419/extensions/details/pdf-viewer/?display=en).

"For Firefox and Netscape" is the name Adobe wrote there. It has to do with the origins of "NPAPI" plug-in architecture which came from Netscape, which Mozilla/Firefox is closely related. This exact same plug-in was the one used by Opera 12.

Is the plug-in enabled in that page? You need to enable it.

I am not a pro. I did like suggested in the other discussion, but I cannot find the right plugin in my list og plugins in opera. The only plugin related is "Adobe Reader
Versjon: 11.0.0.379. Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.0". I wonder why there's no Plugin for Adobe Reader for Opera. I don't know either how to get this plugin as I am just a common user, not an expert. This should not be so complecated, should it, as it allways worked automatically in older versions of Opera and with other browsers. I really like Opera but if such a basic thing like opening a file is so complicated I rather will use another browser - unless someone can help me with this. Type opera:plugins in the address field and press enter to check your plug-ins.
