when I hide speed dial and search bar I'm having a huge gap on top of the news section. this makes no sense. is this only a mac thing? is there going to be a fix for this?

I was requesting it since that time when the 'News' feature was implemented. They really don't think this looks weird, also they ignore requests about adding a toggle button in EasySetup menu to quickly show/hide speed dial tiles.
