If not, you simply select custom path in the installer's options.

Opera only manages to update manually for me on about 2 out of 10 occasions, a rival browser manages 10 out of 10 every time.
Going will the full offline installer is what I usually end up doing, but makes sure it instals into existing Opera program file dilrectory.

What is the wording of the error message (and can you determine the message's source)?

There are a number of things that can cause update failure. They vary from something wrong in the installation to censorship blocking of the Opera server URL in certain nations.
