I was hoping to find a way to have tabs in vertical mode but use very little of my screen that is in portrait mode.

interested for this extra extended functionality? if you do, would you consider giving the option of a configurable to be permanently visible (or auto-hiding per settings), tabbed sidebar about the same size of what we see already when you click the icon on the side?
ending up, setting them in mind, as classic bookmarks bar and a thin discrete tabbed bookmarks bar on the side next to opera's sidebar, with negligible loss size-wise for a page (while keeping the original functionality. that's up to you really, if you like the idea, to combine them or make another extension. closing tbh i have no idea about coding i do not know if it's easy/hard or time consuming that's why i am just suggesting mindlessly 😛 )

the idea came from the discrete size and the way the tabs arrange, the extension already has thinking it could incorporate some extended functionality
