Could you add a setting where Opera force closes itself and dumps cache & data automatically.
Everytime I come back to my phone to start browsing, it loads all the often days old tabs that are no longer relevant at all, often using 2-3 Mb everytime.

Even if I exit, I still see Opera in 'running apps', whereas a webview browser does actually close.

My tablet tells me what's still running - if I use Home any app stays running. If I use Back some apps close; some stay running until another app needs the space, but all the browsers stay alive. Only Exit from the menu actually closes Opera, Firefox or Vivaldi (I don't use Chrome so can't say if it closes on its own.

Though I have turned off Opera's annoying notifications (in Opera) - if you still have those enabled that part probably stays running.

I was hoping for something just by hitting the home button on the android.

Already there. Choose Exit from the menu. (looks like the icon for a power button, and is actually on the same line as Settings so you probably never realized it was there) A dialog appears with checkboxes for closing all open tabs and for clearing history and cache (and a Cancel button if you hit it by mistake).

Yes, I understand why people miss it, but that isn't an icon I'd associate with Settings ...

Thanks,
Didn't knew that!
