Some features may be unavailable and changes to settings won't be saved" This usually happens on a standalone instal of Opera, I notice something similar has happened with chrome see https://www.wintips.org/how-to-fix-your-preferences-can-not-be-read-error-in-chrome-solved Has anyone else experienced this in Opera ?

I just had my I-Mac RAM upgraded by a computer tech from 1GB to 3GB.Opera attempts to load in but at the last moment it still crashes and I still get the same error message.It is Opera 25 for Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8.
If more RAM doesn't solve the problem,it must be on their end.I read that Opera does need at least 2GB RAM,but it was working fine even on 1GB.In any case the RAM upgrade did help tremendously.

People expect a browser to work properly or a full explanation as to why the problem occurs. Also users should not be expected to try and sort the matter out, it is up to Opera to do this. I experiment with Opera on an occasional basis but its not going to be my main browser whilst this problem still occurs. My main browser is another chromium browser with huge backing and I suppose the moderator would not want me to mention it. Suffice to say I have had no problems with spurious messages with this other browser etc and as Opera is built on Chromium the problem is clearly with them.

In this thread "Profile Error Occurred" - Message On Opera Startup it has been explained in detail and the only solution is to keep a backup copy of the Cookies files.

Then, close Opera and rename the profile folder from "Opera Stable" to "Opera Stable old". Then, when Opera starts up, it should be like a new Opera.

If you still get the error with the new profile folder, right-click the profile folder, goto security and check that your user account has full read and write access to all files and folders in the folder. Also, make sure nothing is set to read-only on the general tab.

Same solution as the same error on Google Chrome.

The problem comes back after a while so developers please do something.

Not sure if its temporary or permanent solution but it worked for me

Steps:

  1. Close all Opera GX related processes.
  2. Go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera GX Stable.
  3. Copy and Paste "Webdata" and "Webdata-journal" somewhere and keep it safe.
  4. Delete "Webdata" and "Webdata-journal".
  5. See for yourself.
  6. If it doesn't work, return "Webdata" and "Webdata-journal".

Side effects:

  • My search engine returned to Google

  • Extensions removed

Whenever I wait a few minutes from Windows startup to start Opera, the error does not occur.

I'm still experiencing the same problem without any working solution for this problem. Periodically, I make backup of the file "C:\Users\XXXXXXXXXX\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Cookies" and restore it in the case of this problem.

As the original poster of this topic two years ago it is very disappointing that after all this time the same issues remain.
If Opera developers don't think there is a problem how come other chrome browsers in my experience don't have the same issue, for example Edge and Vivaldi ?
Every few months I instal Opera to see if anything has changed but its getting depressing. My other gripe with Opera is manually instigating an update when I am greeted by the message "an error has occurred" until after several attempts I finally get the browser to update. This is not a problem with other Chromium browsers, so why Opera ?
You would think that the developers would do everything possible to make the browser a pleasure to use rather than make users consider moving elsewhere ,even if it is only a temporary move.

I e mailed Opera Headquarters and they told me when I upgrade my RAM from 1GB to 4GB to get back to them I must hire a professional technician to do this and I must shut down my I Mac before he arrives and I must wait 14 hours at least before waking it up.I learned it takes 30 seconds for the new memory to boot in after the computer wakes up.I have not done this yet but I hope to and hope to get back to you when I do. By the way,Opera on mobile devices do work but do need to be refreshed
from time to time.

While my Opera Browser is still out on my desktop, on my Opera Mini Browser 51 works great on my Android mobile phone It does however need to be refreshed when it goes to Google double clicks Other than that at least
on mobile internet Opera is fine.
